It is a privilege and an honor for Kate to serve as a member of the Human Rights Committee (HRC) for InReach. This vital committee plays a critical role in safeguarding the rights, dignity, and well-being of the individuals InReach supports right here in Charlotte, NC, and across its service areas.

My Commitment on the HRC:
In this role, I am dedicated to being a vigilant advocate. My focus is on listening deeply, understanding diverse perspectives, and working collaboratively with fellow committee members, staff, individuals served, and their families. Together, we ensure that every decision respects individual autonomy, promotes safety, and champions the inherent dignity and rights of all. Serving on the HRC is a profound responsibility, and I am deeply committed to contributing meaningfully to this essential safeguard within our community.

The Role of the Human Rights Committee:
The HRC operates independently to provide essential oversight and advocacy. Our core responsibilities include:

  1. Rights Advocacy: Reviewing policies and practices to ensure they uphold the fundamental human and legal rights of individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD) and autism.

  2. Informed Consent Oversight: Carefully reviewing situations involving decision-making support or proposed restrictive interventions, always prioritizing the least restrictive alternatives and maximizing individual choice.

  3. Incident Review & Prevention: Monitoring significant incidents to identify trends, recommend preventive actions, and ensure appropriate follow-up.

  4. Education & Awareness: Promoting understanding of human rights principles among all stakeholders.

  5. Policy Guidance: Providing recommendations to strengthen protections and enhance the quality of life for individuals supported by InReach.
